Here we’re taking a look at not only the most common ChatGPT sayings but the most obvious ones — the dead giveaways that the text you’re reading was generated by a large language model (LLM).
There are several sayings that ChatGPT often defaults to, which can help readers identify when AI writing was used to produce content. Keep an eye out for some of these common and obvious ChatGPT terms in what you’re reading.

Much has been made recently about the sources that ChatGPT uses for AI training to improve its outputs (which has led to several OpenAI lawsuits). If it is constantly learning from the same content well, then the output is likely to start seeming very similar.

In 2022, shortly after the launch of ChatGPT, TechCrunch reported on the chatbot.
In one of the generated responses quoted in the article, the chatbot stated, “As a large language model trained by OpenAI…” highlighting this obvious ChatGPT saying.
Another phrase that clearly indicates text is generated by ChatGPT or AI, is the phrase “My training data…”
AI training data for LLMs often has a specific cutoff date or a date up to which the particular model is trained.
For instance, OpenAI’s AI model documentation states that a number of its models are trained up until data from September 30, 2023, including:
So, a section of generated text that includes “my training data,” is a strong indication of AI-generated text.
For instance, in the same TechCrunch article, the generated text included quotes such as:
Paragraphs that start with “absolutely” or “certainly” are common and obvious indications that text was generated by ChatGPT.
To test it out we asked ChatGPT a quick, general question: “Can you tell me about ChatGPT?”
In response, it said: “Absolutely! Here's a simple and friendly overview of ChatGPT…”
We then asked another question: “Can you tell me more about AI training?”
Once again ChatGPT created a response that began with “Absolutely”: “Absolutely! Training AI—especially large models like ChatGPT—is a complex but fascinating process.”
Then, yet again, in response to the further question: “Could you describe deep learning?”
ChatGPT replied with “Absolutely!”: “Absolutely! Deep learning is one of the most exciting and powerful parts of AI today…”
Then, “Certainly” is another common ChatGPT saying (but more on that below!).
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most common ChatGPT phrases.

In an incredibly ironic turn of events, ‘unique’ was a frequently used word.
Perhaps it’s due to users trying to prompt ChatGPT to produce unique, high-quality content.
Then, some other words that ChatGPT commonly used based on our analyses included: additionally, finally, conclusion, journey, difference, and certainly.
Words like, ‘journey’ or ‘certainly’ are a familiar sight at the beginning of generated text, which can make it feel stale or bland (one of the issues with AI writing).
Despite obvious sayings like “as a large language model,” “my training data,” or the use of words like “absolutely” or “certainly” humans struggle to identify AI text according to multiple research studies.
