222.5% Increase in AI Alibaba Shopping App Reviews: 2020 to 2024

With our proprietary Originality.ai AI detection tool, we studied the proportion of AI Alibaba shopping app reviews from 2018 to 2024, and discovered a significant increase in AI content between 2020 and 2024. These are our findings.

Consumer trust in online shopping is heavily influenced by user-generated reviews.

Shoppers rely on these ratings and testimonials to make informed purchasing decisions, shaping the success of platforms like Alibaba, one of the world’s largest e-commerce marketplaces.

However, as artificial intelligence continues to evolve, so does its role in content creation — including the generation of product reviews.

This raises an important question: How prevalent are AI-generated reviews on Alibaba, and what impact do they have on consumer perception and trust?

This study aims to analyze the extent of AI-generated reviews on the Alibaba app, using machine learning techniques to detect patterns in review authenticity.

Objectives of the Study

  • We aimed to understand whether the reviews left on products in the Alibaba shopping app could be trusted as real human experiences and insights.
  • We wanted to see if Alibaba was allowing AI content to feature prominently on the shopping app.
  • We endeavored to understand the impact that an increase in AI-generated reviews could have on the Alibaba brand.

Key Takeaways (TL;DR)

  • 2020 to 2024: AI reviews on the Alibaba Shopping App increased by 222.5%.
  • 2018 to 2020: AI Alibaba Shopping App reviews fluctuated between 1.9% and 2.5%.
  • By 2024, AI Alibaba shopping app reviews rose to 6.2%.
  • This highlights a more than threefold increase in AI reviews from 2020 to 2024.
Key Takeaways (TL;DR)

In 2024, 6.2% of Alibaba Reviews Were Likely AI

In 2024, 6.2% of Alibaba Reviews Were Likely AI

This study reveals a significant increase in AI-generated reviews on the Alibaba Shopping App, particularly in recent years.

From 2020 to 2024, the percentage of AI-generated reviews increased by 222.5%, indicating a growing presence of AI-written content on e-commerce platforms.

The 2024 data further emphasizes the shift, with AI-generated reviews making up a noticeable and increasing portion of the total reviews (see the pie chart above).

Why is it possible that AI reviews are increasing? The increasing adoption of generative AI technologies and automated content-generation tools has likely contributed to this trend.

Although the number of AI reviews is rising, it is important to remember that a large majority of reviews remain human-written (93.8%). However, if that number continues to increase, it could cause significant concern for Alibaba app users.

2020 to 2024: AI Alibaba Shopping App Reviews Grew by 222.5%

2020 to 2024: AI Alibaba Shopping App Reviews Grew by 222.5%

The trend of AI-generated reviews on the Alibaba Shopping App has changed significantly over time. From 2018 to 2020, the AI-generated review rate remained relatively low, fluctuating between 1.9% and 2.5%. This suggests that AI-generated content was either less prevalent or effectively moderated during this period.

However, from 2021 onwards, there was a noticeable rise in AI-generated review rates, reaching approximately 2.5%, signalling a shift in user-generated content on the platform.

A key trend emerged as the AI-generated review rate increased by 222.5% from 2020 to 2024

This surge aligns with the widespread adoption and accessibility of AI tools for content generation (such as the release of ChatGPT in 2022), including automated review writing and chatbot-assisted feedback.

Implications of AI Alibaba Reviews

Implications of AI Alibaba Reviews

With advancements in generative AI technologies, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, businesses and individuals have increasingly relied on AI-generated content for promotional purposes or to streamline customer engagement.

AI reviews, posts, and content are rising across a number of industries such as Glassdoor Reviews for S&P 500 Companies, Reddit posts, Quora answers, and Zillow reviews.

In the context of the Alibaba shopping app, while some AI-generated reviews may be used legitimately by sellers to streamline product descriptions or summarize customer feedback, there is growing concern about the potential for manipulation. Fake or artificially enhanced reviews can distort product reputations, mislead buyers, and undermine the integrity of online marketplaces.

The more than threefold increase in AI-generated reviews from 2020 to 2024 raises important concerns regarding content authenticity on e-commerce platforms. If this trend continues, Alibaba and similar platforms may need to reinforce AI detection and moderation strategies to maintain trust in online reviews.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this study highlights the importance of maintaining transparency in e-commerce reviews. As AI technology evolves, businesses must strike a balance between leveraging AI for efficiency and preserving the integrity of user-generated content.

Moving forward, Alibaba and similar platforms will need to adapt their review policies and detection strategies to uphold trust and authenticity in an increasingly AI-driven digital marketplace.

As AI-generated content continues to shape the landscape of online reviews, platforms like Alibaba will need to:

  • Strengthen AI detection mechanisms to ensure credibility.
  • Implement advanced AI moderation tools.
  • Improve review verification processes.
  • Educate consumers about AI-generated content to help mitigate potential risks.

Methodology

This study used automated AI content detection to analyze AI-generated reviews on the Alibaba Shopping App. The process involved extracting user reviews, scanning them with Originality.ai, and classifying each as AI-generated or human-written. Trends in AI-generated content were then analyzed over time.

  • Data Collection: The dataset, sourced from Alibaba user reviews, included review content, timestamps, user engagement metrics, and customer support replies. It was stored in CSV format and verified for completeness before processing.
  • AI Content Detection: Originality.ai was used to detect AI-generated reviews, providing an AI-likelihood score and a binary classification. Reviews with fewer than 50 words were excluded. The API call included error handling for accuracy.
  • Data Processing & Storage: Reviews were processed and classified iteratively, with partial results saved every 500 reviews to minimize data loss. The final dataset was exported for further analysis.
  • Trend Analysis: AI-generated review trends were tracked by analyzing the 'at' timestamp column converted to a yearly format. The proportion of AI-generated reviews per year was calculated to identify trends.

This methodology provided a structured approach to analyzing AI-generated content in e-commerce
