AI has quickly simplified many complex and tedious day-to-day tasks. Now, it’s lending even more of a hand with OpenAI Tasks.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what the new OpenAI Tasks feature does, how it works, who can access it, and what you need to know to make the most of it.

As reported by The Verge, in January 2025 OpenAI released a new feature — Tasks or Scheduled Tasks.
According to OpenAI, Tasks is in the early beta phase; it’s a new AI-driven feature that lets users schedule reminders and automate ongoing tasks or prompts to turn their daily to-do list into a more efficient, streamlined workflow.
Using GPT-4o technology, scheduling a task or reminder is becoming easier than ever. Need to set a reminder for an important meeting? Schedule recurring events? Looking for a quick weekly snapshot of the latest news as a concise ChatGPT-generated summary? OpenAI Tasks can help you get it done.
Not surprisingly, OpenAI Tasks comes with a variety of features that make it intuitive and easy to use, including:
OpenAI’s asks are designed to integrate easily with apps and devices, including:
The Tasks management page which OpenAI describes as the location to “view and manage all of your scheduled tasks,” is only available on their web-based platform, ChatGPT Web.
Within the ChatGPT Web application, you can also disable notifications for Tasks that are set to notify you via mobile or web.
Currently, OpenAI’s Tasks is still in early beta. It’s available for OpenAI Plus subscribers as well as users of OpenAI’s Pro and Teams plans.
Eventually, the feature will roll out to the general public, although there is no timetable as to when that may be.
The capability of OpenAI Tasks to enable users to create reminders on a one-time or repeated basis is reminiscent of some of Siri and Alexa’s capabilities as reported by The Verge and Tech Crunch.
However, although OpenAI Tasks shares some similarities with virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa, by offering scheduled reminders, it’s in the very early stages — it’s simply not as mature as either Siri or Alexa in terms of integrations with the broader device management ecosystem.
For instance, Siri and Alexa currently have an extensive range of capabilities including, setting the thermostat or lighting at a certain hour. However, OpenAI Tasks is only suited to task scheduling and management.
As noted by The Verge, one of the interesting features to watch as Tasks continues to develop is its AI-powered potential to go a step beyond simply setting reminders and create the foundation for something that could “interact with environments” or even “learn from feedback” without a human continuously updating or modifying its inputs.
The ability to schedule tasks or reminders is similar to features that Siri and Alexa users rely on. However, it’s not ready to replace them.
For now, OpenAI Tasks is an exciting development for leveraging both AI and productivity that could become a must-have tool for business and daily life.
For instance, rather than typing in tasks or sifting through menus like with other task management apps, users can simply write to OpenAI’s Tasks using natural language (the example OpenAI provides as a Tasks instructions prompt is: “Search the web and summarize.”)
The full impact of OpenAI Tasks in the context of Sir, Alexa, and other task management apps remains to be seen as its development continues.
Many traditional task management apps offer user-friendly interfaces and navigation, however, OpenAI Tasks brings the potential for something new to the table.
OpenAI Tasks currently offers features to schedule a recurring reminder or run a weekly prompt such as a news summary. This ability to schedule a reminder has news outlets discussing it comparatively with Siri and Alexa — and while it doesn’t offer the same broader device integrations as either yet — it is only in early beta.
It will be interesting to see how the feature continues to evolve and develop in time, and the potential it could hold to change how we schedule, manage, and get our to-do’s done, and even make previous versions of task management apps seem old-fashioned.
