Plagiarism and Ai Detection tool comparison

Until now it has been impossible to use a tool to detect if someone used paraphrase software like Quillbot to bypass either a plagiarism checker or AI detection tool.

Whether content starts as Human Generated or AI-Generated once the content has been run through a paraphrasing tool it became undetectable to all AI Detectors and Plagiarism Checkers EXCEPT Originality.AI!

Originality.AI has built the first-of-its-kind AI that can detect if the content was modified using a paraphrasing tool like Quillbot. Our AI has been trained on what paraphrased content looks like and can detect it with 94.66% accuracy.

Plagiarism and Ai Detection tool comparison

In the article below we will run tests and show…

  1. How paraphrasing tools like Quillbot have been used for years to bypass plagiarism-checking tools
  2. How paraphrasing tools like Quillbot can bypass AI detection tools
  3. The accuracy of Originality.AI at detecting if the content has been paraphrased
  4. Paraphrasing and Plagiarism… what you need to know to ensure you don’t get in trouble

Part 1 – Paraphrase Tools Used to Bypass Plagiarism Checkers

The most common way to bypass plagiarism detection that has existed for years is to take the original work, run it through a paraphrasing tool like Quillbot, and then it will pass plagiarism checkers like TurnItIn or Copyscape.

Here is how students and writers typically bypass plagiarism checkers using Paraphrasing software.

  • Step 1 – Find and Copy Content They Want to “Claim As Their Own”
  • Step 2 – Run it through a Paraphrase Tool
  • Step 3 – Confirm It Passes Plagiarism Checkers

Example:

Step 1 – Find Content… But, Plagiarism Detectors Can Identify It:

Below shows a screenshot of Copyscape correctly identifying the content as plagiarized. Similarly, you can see the content and the results for the scan at Originality.AI correctly identifying it as Original (human created) but Plagiarized – https://app.originality.ai/share/9xm6fq8aswojurvz

Step 2 – Paraphrase the Content:

The image below shows the content getting paraphrased by Quillbot. Paraphrasing tools change out words with synonyms while trying to keep the message the same.

Step 3 – Plagiarism Check after Paraphrasing:

The image below shows CopyScape failing to identify the plagiarized content after it has been run through Quillbot.

However, the image below shows the results of Originality.AI being able to accurately detect that it was machine written (in this case human content that was then paraphrased).

Part 2 – Paraphrase Tools Used to Bypass AI Detectors

With the rise of Chat GPT and then the increased usage of AI detectors like Originality.AI people have been using paraphrasing tools to bypass detection.

The most common way to bypass most AI detection tools like Originality.AI, GPTZero, or OpenAI’s text classifier was to create content in ChatGPT and then run it through a paraphrasing tool. This used to result in text that passes BOTH plagiarism tests and AI detection tests.

However, Originality.AI has launched an AI that can now detect if the content has been paraphrased.

To learn more about Originality.AI’s AI detection read:

Here is how students and writers typically bypass AI Detectors using Paraphrase tools like Quillbot.

  • Step 1 – Create Content in ChatGPT
  • Step 2 – Run it through a Paraphrase Tool
  • Step 3 – Confirm It Passes AI Content Checkers

Example:

Step 1 – Create Content in ChatGPT

Once the content has been created (with Chat GPT) some of the AI detection tools are capable of identifying if the content was AI-generated. Here is a study and graph showing the AI detection tool accuracy of several popular detection tools.

AI detection tools accuracy test results

Below is the ChatGPT (GPT-4) produced article that we will test the AI detectors on before we run the content through a paraphrasing tool and then test again.

Ai generated content using chatgpt-4

You can see the sample and the results for Originality.AI at this link – https://app.originality.ai/share/yaivtuex0z4lnodq

Tool AI Detection Before Paraphrasing
Originality.AI 100% AI
GPTZero Likely Written by AI
OpenAI Text Classifier Unlikely AI Written
Writer.com 100% Human Generated
ZeroGPT 83.84% AI
ContentAtScale 60% AI Content

The results are that 4 tools correctly identified it as likely AI-generated and 2 identified it incorrectly as human.

Step 2 – Paraphrase ChatGPT Created Content With the Intent to Bypass Detection

The next step people looking to fool AI content checkers do is to run it through a paraphrasing tool like Quillbot. Below is an image of the test article being paraphrased.

Step 3 – Paraphrased ChatGPT Content Tricks AI Detectors

After running the ChatGPT content through Quillbot I rescanned it with the same AI detection tools and compare the before and after results.

The result is that running ChatGPT content through a paraphrasing tool like Quillbot has it passing AI detection at all tools except Originality.AI

Tool AI Detection Before Paraphrasing AI Detection AFTER Paraphrasing
Originality.AI 100% AI 100% AI
GPTZero Likely Written by AI Entirely by a Human
OpenAI Text Classifier Unlikely AI Written Very Unlikely AI
Writer.com 100% Human Generated 100% Human Generated
ZeroGPT 83.84% AI 39.3% AI

Part 3 – Can Originality.AI Detect Paraphrased Content?

In this section, we are going to do a more in-depth review of how our AI tool works, run a more thorough live test, and discuss the larger test that was done.

Whether content is Human Generated or AI-Generated once it has been run through a paraphrasing tool it is undetectable to all AI Detectors and Plagiarism Checkers EXCEPT Originality.AI!

How Does Our AI Work?

Our AI is capable of detecting paraphrased content because unlike most other AI detection tools that rely on how likely the next word was AI generated our AI model looks at the complete article to identify patterns. These patterns were learned when we trained our model on millions of human, AI-generated, and paraphrased pieces of content.

The downside to our approach is that it is FAR more expensive to train and operate than the simpler approach used by other tools.

For a more in-depth look at how our AI works read this article – https://originality.ai/how-does-ai-content-detection-work/

How Accurate is our Paraphrase Checker?

Based on the in-depth AI detection accuracy study the image below shows the “confusion matrix” identifying how many times the tool correctly predicted content had been paraphrased vs a control set of human-created content.

False Positive Detection

False positives were calculated at 2.46% on the accuracy study. False positives do happen and that is why we do not recommend that AI detection alone is used to justify disciplinary action.

We understand how frustrating it can be to be accused of the writing you worked hard on not being your own work.

This is why we created a free Google Chrome AI Detector extension that allows you to visualize the entire document creation process. If you are unlucky and your content gets flagged incorrectly you can share the report showing the entire creation process (if you create the document from scratch in a Google Document).

Quillbot Paraphrase Checker – Case Study

In the study and video below we look at a small test of 20 articles in real time to test if Quillbot is able to trick Originality.AI

The first test is Human Generated content that has been plagiarized. Meaning content that is already published on the web and we are VERY confident it was human-created. In this case, we should see…

  • AI Detected – NO
  • Plagiarism Detected – YES

Then after going through Quillbot paraphrasing it should change to…

  • AI Detected – Yes
  • Plagiarism Detected – No

Here are the results…

human writing quillbot plagiarism test

Originality.AI Plagiarism Checking Alternatives: All other Plagiarism checking solutions would identify plagiarism but then detect neither AI or Plagiarism after the content was passed through Quillbot.

The second test is AI-Generated content that then gets run through a paraphrasing tool. For this case, we should see…

  •  AI Detected – Yes
  • Plagiarism Detected – No

Then after going through Quillbot paraphrasing it should change to…

  • AI Detected – Yes
  • Plagiarism Detected – No

Originality.AI AI Detection Alternatives: All other AI Detection solutions might identify the original document was AI generated but then detect neither AI or Plagiarism after the content was passed through Quillbot.

Part 4 – Paraphrase and Plagiarism FAQ

Is Quillbot Plagiarism?

Yes, using QuillBot can be considered plagiarism if you do not properly attribute the original source. While QuillBot is a useful tool for paraphrasing content, it is essential to remember that the ideas and information in the rephrased text still belong to the original author.

Does Turnitin Detect Quillbot Paraphrase Plagiarism?

No, standard plagiarism checkers like Turnitin or Copyscape do not detect paraphrased content by Quillbot as plagiarism. The only tool that accurately detects paraphrased content is Originality.AI. You can check if your content passes Originality by signing up here

Is Quillbot Detectable?

Yes, Quillbot content is detectable with 94.66% accuracy, using the AI detector at Originality.AI if the content is paraphrased using Quillbot it can be identified as not human-generated content regardless of if that content starts as copied human content or Chat GPT created content.

How to Paraphrase Without Plagiarizing

Paraphrasing is the process of restating someone else’s ideas or information in your own words. It is an essential skill for academic writing and research, but it is important to avoid plagiarism by properly crediting the original source.

Here are some tips for paraphrasing without plagiarizing:

  1. Understand the original text: Make sure you fully understand the meaning of the original text before attempting to paraphrase it.
  2. Use synonyms and different sentence structures: Instead of copying and pasting sentences, try using synonyms for keywords and phrases, and restructure the sentences to create a new version.
  3. Change the sentence order: Rearrange the order of the sentences or paragraphs to create a new flow and structure.
  4. Use citation: Even if you paraphrase, it is essential to give credit to the original author by citing the source appropriately. This can be done in text or in a reference list.
  5. Use a plagiarism checker: Use a plagiarism checker to ensure that your paraphrased content does not match the original source too closely.

Remember, paraphrasing is not just about changing a few words here and there. It involves fully understanding the content and expressing it in your own words while giving proper credit to the original source.

Here is a great guide on avoiding plagiarism while paraphrasing by MIT.

Paraphrase Plagiarism Definition

Paraphrase plagiarism refers to the act of rewording or restructuring someone else’s work, ideas, or intellectual property without proper attribution, presenting it as one’s own original creation.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that…

  • Paraphrasing without proper attribution is plagiarism
  • All other plagiarism detectors can not detect if copied content has been paraphrased
  • All other AI detectors can not detect if AI content like ChatGPT has been paraphrased
  • Originality.AI can detect if the content (human-created or AI created) has been paraphrased with 94.66% accuracy
