PlagiarismChecker.net Review

PlagiarismChecker.net is a simple and straightforward online plagiarism detector that scans essays for plagiarism by allowing students to copy and paste their content into the online scanner and check it.

PlagiarismChecker.net is a simple and straightforward online plagiarism detector that scans essays for plagiarism by allowing students to copy and paste their content into the online scanner and check it. But despite its simple design, does it stand up to the latest advances in AI and plagiarism detection? We take a closer look in this detailed review.

What is PlagiarismChecker.net?

The PlagiarismChecker.net Home Page

PlagiarismChecker.net is a free online plagiarism scanner and detector that allows students to scan their written essays by copying and pasting their work into the text box and clicking Scan Now. In just seconds, the system determines whether or not the content can be found elsewhere on the web, and includes a link to the highest probable match

How Does PlagiarismChecker.net Work?

PlagiarismChecker.net checks your text submission to see if it matches other text online. It scans up to 2000 words in just seconds and displays a result along with a percentage of what it believes is plagiarized content.

Testing PlagiarismChecker.net with an Originality article

I put PlagiarismChecker.net to the test with one of our very own Originality.AI articles to see if it could find a match. In just seconds, it came up with the Bing link to the published piece as anticipated.

However, its results when tested against AI are less than stellar. I asked ChatGPT to write me an academic essay about any topic, which I then pasted verbatim into PlagiarismChecker.net. It rated the piece as 100% unique, only linking to a mildly similar work that, when I went to investigate in more detail, brought up no results at all.

Why Use PlagiarismChecker.net?

Where PlagiarismChecker.net sets itself apart is through its extensive library of information. The plagiarism checker itself is rather rudimentary at best and there are far better options that are much more advanced already on the market.

However, if you need a quick refresher, for instance, on Chicago Footnote Style or you’re looking for plagiarism-related lesson plans for secondary school, college and university students, PlagiarismChecker.net can help. These guides are, in their own words, “prepared by a lecturer from one of the UK’s leading universities who has taught undergraduates, postgraduates, GCSE and A-Level students for 30+ years”

Beyond the guides, which can be found in the site’s Ask the Doc section, there are also plagiarism-related articles, reviews and resources on how to handle various types of citations. This can be a valuable resource for students who need to not only quickly check a document for plagiarism but also have greater clarity on how to format their work so as to avoid any instances of plagiarism.

It’s worth noting that there is no real rhyme or reason to the posts themselves. They aren’t categorized in any way apart from being able to see all of the lesson plans, articles or resources at one time. So if you need to find some specific example of how to write a citation according to a certain set of academic guidelines, you likely won’t find it there.

The site itself is clearly one professor’s crusade against plagiarism, which is very admirable in itself, but in terms of accurate plagiarism checking, which is what this review is about, the plagiarism checker is less of a plagiarism checker and more of a direct text match fetcher.

Advantages of Using PlagiarismChecker.net

  • Simple - PlagiarismChecker.net is incredibly fast at generating a plagiarism score if you need near-instantaneous results.
  • Fast - Unlike other scans which are more thorough but take longer, PlagiarismChecker.net is incredibly fast.
  • Free - It costs nothing to scan up to 2000 words

If you need to know whether or not your essay appears elsewhere on the web and you need to know quickly, PlagiarismChecker.net can show you in seconds (without all of the sponsored ad results and other clutter that the same search results on Google will throw your way)

Limitations of PlagiarismChecker.net

  • Results can be inaccurate - PlagiarismChecker.net is incredibly simple and straightforward and the results along with the plagiarism similarity score can be hit or miss.
  • Only accounts for direct text matches - The checker appears to only scan the Bing search engine for exact text matches, making it a slimmed down version of what Copyscape does.
  • Not as advanced as other tools - The scanner cannot detect advanced instances of plagiarism such as paraphrasing, patchwork plagiarism or other more nuanced examples of plagiarism.

There are simply far better, free alternatives to PlagiarismChecker.net on the market that do a much more thorough job when it comes to scanning for multiple types of plagiarism.

How Does PlagiarismChecker.net Compare To…

Wondering how PlagiarismChecker.net compares to other popular plagiarism detectors? Let’s take a closer look:

Turnitin

Turnitin is a plagiarism detection platform often used by schools, colleges and universities. Because it offers numerous types of plagiarism scanning services, all of which leverage more advanced algorithms than PlagiarismChecker.net, it’s the equivalent of comparing an acorn to an oak tree. Both of them scan for plagiarism but one is far more adept than the other.

Copyscape

Copyscape checks for duplicate content elsewhere on the web, using a similar process as PlagiarismChecker.net. Although the two services are similar, PlagiarismChecker.net is much faster than Copyscape, but much less thorough in its searches. If you need more  comprehensive checking of where else your content may be on the web, Copyscape may be a better option.

Originality.AI

PlagiarismChecker.net does not scan for artificial intelligence-written content in any form (as evinced by my test of ChatGPT-produced content as a mock essay for it to check). This is precisely what Originality.AI excels at. In addition, Originality.AI also offers a much more comprehensive plagiarism check, scanning over 900 billion web pages and databases to find similar or identical matches. In short, it takes what PlagiarismChecker.net can do and cranks it up to 11.

How Does Originality.AI’s Algorithm Work?

Originality.AI is an artificial intelligence platform that is trained on both content written with AI and content written by humans. With these specific parameters, as well as advanced machine learning algorithms and language models, Originality.AI can discern the tell-tale “signals” that AI-written content gives in order to determine that the information has indeed been written by ChatGPT, Bard or other similar AI writers.

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve and become more human-like in its writing, so too does Originality.AI also continue on its development to root out potential AI writing. The makers of Originality.AI aren’t looking to classify AI-written content as bad or pick a side in the AI versus human writing debate, but rather we believe that AI has its place and that more than anything, readers, users and search engines want content of value.

AI itself relies on patterns, and if you use it for long enough, those patterns will start to emerge and be easily visible no matter what context the language model is fed. Originality.AI is trained on these very mechanisms and knows how to spot these patterns and nuanced habits that separate a human from a machine.

Should You Use PlagiarismChecker.net?

The question then becomes, should you use PlagiarismChecker.net? While it’s a fast and intuitive way to scan for plagiarism quickly, the service doesn’t seem to scan for plagiarism any more than doing a direct text match search in Bing is a “plagiarism scan”.  This would also explain why the system is so fast at generating results; it’s not actually crawling through academic databases or student essays to find matches, rather it’s doing a preliminary search engine glance to see what else is out there and presenting it as a potential match.

That being said, PlagiarismChecker.net can be a helpful resource, particularly if you’re an educator and you’re looking for lesson plans to explain the concept of plagiarism to your students (whether in secondary school, college or university). It’s worth mentioning that these articles haven’t been updated since 2022, so it’s entirely possible that no new pieces will be published from this point on.

Considering how today’s plagiarism detectors have gone above and beyond plain text string matching and delve into things like mosaic plagiarism, scanning of magazine and print databases and other more advanced types of detection, it’s easy to see how services like PlagiarismChecker.net can be left in the dust in favor of a more intuitive, more thorough and more sophisticated tools.

The good news is that with Originality.AI you can not only conduct a thorough plagiarism scan, but you can also scan for AI-written content either simultaneously or on a one-off case. You can also check for readability – an important factor when considering the target audience that’s consuming your content.

With pricing starting at just 1 cent per 100 words scanned, it’s an affordable alternative to a more simplistic plagiarism scanner that seems to be left behind in the early days of the internet when such a feat would’ve been considered cutting edge.

Try Originality.AI for yourself and see the difference when it comes to a robust plagiarism and AI detection scan!
